Beauty in a World of Ugliness - Dr John Crosby
This short excerpt (from a longer lecture given by the von Hildebrand Project with guest speaker Sir Roger Scruton) talks of the post modern society's increasing threat to the concept of beauty. Rampant materialism and consumerism means there is a diminishing space for the merely beautiful. Beauty for beauty's sake.
Here Dr John Crosby sets out the case for humanity exposing the fundamental differences between those who are able to craft or appreciate beauty and those who are unable or unwilling to do so:
"All beauty sings. Full abundant humanity. Those who are deeply moved by beauty are fully awakened. Aesthetes have a freedom of spirit, a capacity for that elevated existence. They are a ...

Eighties Elegance
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.3 года назад
This short montage depicts a last century elegance from the Eighties. Often maligned with power dressing and pop culture, the Eighties in fact produced some true classics that have lasted the test of time. Never represented better than by Gianfranco Ferre's collection whose simplicity of line, cut and colour exemplifies a graceful timelessness combined with true femininity. The background music...
Christian Dior Haute Couture AW 18/19
Просмотров 3,9 тыс.5 лет назад
Elegance is Timeless. This phrase, more than any other, seems most apt to sum up this year's Dior catwalk. A pure, unapologetic homage to the original 1950s House of Dior as worn by Dietrich and the Duchess of Windsor. Full, almost floor length skirts, tight bodices, tiny waists, simple necklines on dresses, berets, a rainbow of coloured satin and silk brocade, velvet chokers and pearls. Of cou...
Carolina Herrera: Old World Glamour
Просмотров 5 тыс.5 лет назад
Mrs Herrera, although having resided in contemporary New York for several decades, still carries with her the essence of a fast fading era, an old world glamour from Caracas - a time of great sophistication and classiness. In her own words "she wants to make women look more beautiful". These traits are key to her collections - not edgy, never exposing too much flesh - just simple lines, exquisi...
Dries Van Noten Exquisite Beauty
Просмотров 75 тыс.6 лет назад
"One should either create a work of art. Or be a work of art." Oscar Wilde Perhaps this saying more than any other sums up the life of Dries Van Noten where "life overlaps art". Here this small excerpt from a larger documentary shows his application of art to create the most sumptuously beautiful setting in both the interior and garden of his stunning home in Lier near Antwerp. And later, a gli...
Henry Clarke: Capturing Refinement
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.6 лет назад
Refinement (definition): finesse, polish, finish. Henry Clarke, capturing the end of an era. Many of his greatest photographs were encapsulated in a book entitled "L'Elegance des Annees Cinquante". A reference, perhaps, to the closing days of haute couture at its best - the 1950s. Here the images depict classic sophistication by chic models. But he also regularly included the great dressers of ...
Agnelli: La Dolce Vita
Просмотров 858 тыс.6 лет назад
Marella Agnelli One of the last great swans 1927-2019 "The Agnelli look was about ease, grace and never trying too hard. Like the dinner party just happened without any planning." "Was he vain? He invented it." "He had the view of Aristotle - where goodness and beauty overlap." Three quotes that sum up Gianni Agnelli and la dolce vita. This video is part 2 of the HBO documentary Agnelli (2017)....
Old World Russian Romance in St Petersburg
Просмотров 8 тыс.6 лет назад
Winter, best exemplified, in the freezing landscape of Russia, but most elegantly, St Petersburg. Here a return to the period of old world Imperialism of the Tsars. Great palaces, painted in pale yellows and peach beautifully resonate against the austere landscape. And against this backdrop a moving love story. The background music is Rachmaninov's 1st Movement of Piano Concerto, Saint-Saëns' D...
A Triptyque of English Gardens
Просмотров 12 тыс.7 лет назад
Three English gardens, three locations, three owners. What links them all is, perhaps, the term voluptuousness. It is that distinctly English style of soft, loose, overflowing, informal verdancy helped by an English climate. It is not a style easily understood by Continental gardeners, particularly Dutch, French and Italians who are more used to stiffer, controlled, formal gardens or where abor...
Sofia Coppola's La Traviata - Teatro dell'Opera di Roma
Просмотров 15 тыс.7 лет назад
This opera combines two nations - a tragic French love story accompanied by the stirring score of Italy in the form of Guiseppe Verdi. Coppola, renowned for the sumptuous backdrop in her movie "Marie Antoinette", excels once again in this, her first stage production. The stage sets are simple but stunningly evocative and the costumes, designed by Valentino, complete this opulent creation. La Tr...
The Aesthetes: Expats in Tangier
Просмотров 154 тыс.7 лет назад
Seven expats tell seven journeys which led them to Tangier. Colourful, chaotic, exuberant, eccentric, artistic, intellectual are the adjectives which link them all. Of course they were preceded by many others - Matisse, Delacroix, Yves Saint Laurent, Mark Twain - who were intoxicated by the place. The following quote gives a glimpse of the lives of those who live there: "I stepped into the chur...
Giselle: Belle of the Ballet

Tamara Rojo, Artistic Director of the English National Ballet, presents this BBC ballet documentary on Giselle. It includes both an historic viewpoint on the 150 year old classical ballet, together with a modern interpretation choreographed by Akram Khan. Both stories involve naivete, betrayal, thwarted revenge and ultimately forgiveness. Both Rojo and Khan articulate the karma behind the story...

I often come back to this. It's achingly beautiful. Arguably one of the most beautiful pieces of music written, and danced equally beautifully. If your eyes don't well up with tears when watching this, I dare to say you have no soul.

Gorgeous! That grey dress could've totally overwhelmed a less capable actress. You've got to thank your lucky stars when you find an actress who can model her wardrobe through an emotive performance without looking like she's trying to. There must be a finishing school out there that teaches girls how to move like this! 😁 👌

I was in Jonathan Dawson’s apt some years ago. It a quite something in its decor and so opposite Paul Bowles’ unpretentious apt. And the cock was still galavanting about. Jonathan, by the way, was in Anthony Bourdain’s video on Tangier. That was amusing, Jonathan in the video regaling Anthony at the Café Tingis while the usual ex-pat characters were in the background. Tangier has changed immensely from the 70s but the kasbah and Medina still have some authenticity. And at the end of this video, Blanca Hamri, bless her heart, was at the American School when I came to apply to work when Mc Phillips was headmaster. She seemed anxious for me to meet McPhillips though I later declined the job offer. I just looked Blanca up and discovered she died last year. Almost all I’ve known there have passed. Such memories.

Come to think of it, I don't mind Akram Khan's new music of Giselle, it's both Adolphe Adam's 1841 performance and Fredric Franklin's 1984 ballet I prefer.

I'd much prefer both Adolphe Adam's Giselle and the Phantom Night Dancers 1841 Ballet taking place in Medieval Rhineland, Germany and Akram Khan's Giselle and the Creole Wilis 1984 Ballet taking place in 1840s' Historical Louisiana.

He personified something extraordinary that this video rather defines. I once shook his hand in London. I was riding my bike through Hyde Park, saw him, doubled back, put the bike on its stand and approached him. With me in my leather jacket he looked terrified as I approached but gave me a huge smile when I said "can I shake your hand".
